Biden planned another trip home to Delaware amid Afghanistan debacle: Report

American citizens and allies remain trapped behind Taliban lines in Afghanistan, but President Joe Biden has been largely missing in recent days.

According to the New York Post, Biden is returning home to Delaware for another getaway even as his administration’s botched withdrawal of U.S. troops has left the war-torn country in chaos.

Biden in hiding

Clearly, the optics associated with this move are unflattering. It is unclear if he actually followed through with his planned excursion, but he appeared to have planned for the trip.

As of Thursday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration issued an airspace restriction for Biden’s hometown of Wilmington.

Since the Taliban captured Kabul, Biden has surfaced for a few public appearances during which he commented on the unraveling foreign policy disaster.

As the Taliban claimed control of Afghanistan’s capital city last weekend, Biden was vacationing at Camp David. Following widespread criticism, he cut the trip short and returned to D.C.

He offered a speech on Monday during which he attempted to shift the blame on former President Donald Trump and the Afghan military and subsequently returned to Camp David.

Disrupted plans

The backlash continued and Biden responded with a COVID-related speech ignoring the Afghanistan situation entirely. That performance failed to quell the mounting outrage, so he granted ABC News an interview while otherwise avoiding unnecessary exposure.

While he apparently planned to take an early weekend and head to Delaware, he or his team seem to have determined that the optics were simply too bad. On Friday afternoon, Biden held a press conference during which he addressed the Afghanistan debacle in some detail.

The president reportedly returned to the White House after that appearance. As of Saturday morning, it was still unclear whether he would be visiting his Wilmington home at all this weekend.

By any measure, this has been a tough week for Biden and his administration. Taking any type of vacation during this continuing crisis would likely outrage many Americans, causing his approval rating to plummet further after hitting record lows in the days following the Taliban takeover.

The RealClearPolitics average of polls recently reported that more Biden’s disapproval rating is higher than his approval rating for the first time in his administration.
