President Joe Biden has long been known for his tendency to make bizarre, confusing, and even nonsensical comments in public.
That habit appeared to be on display again this week when he offered a puzzling remark about Democratic Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist.
“In every way”
According to the Washington Examiner, Biden’s apparent slipup came on Tuesday while he was visiting the International Union of Operation Engineers Local 324 training facility in Howell, Michigan.
Biden introduced Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, praising her as “one of the best governors in the United States of America.”
He went on to mention Gilchrist, bizarrely declaring that he “covers” Whitmer “in every way, both in terms of physically, and mentally, and every other way.”
It was not clear what he meant by that statement, but it is consistent with a long list of other odd musings throughout the presidential campaign and during his first nine months in office.
At one point during the presidential primary, Biden told a crowd of South Carolina voters that he was running for a seat in the U.S. Senate. A short time after that flub, Biden drew some mockery after appearing to mistake his wife for his sister during a victory speech.
“Something’s going on here”
Going back further in the campaign, Biden seemed to forget what state he was in during a New Hampshire campaign stop in 2019. He told reporters there that he was glad to be in Vermont.
Along with misleading or outright inaccurate anecdotes from his own past, Biden’s behavior has drawn widespread concern. The latest incident in Michigan is likely to bolster the belief held by many Americans that Biden has experienced serious cognitive decline
A Rasmussen survey conducted in August found that just over half of all respondents did not believe Biden is mentally fit to be president.
U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who previously served as the White House physician, has called on Biden to take the same type of cognitive test administered to former President Donald Trump.
Jackson explained his position in July, asserting: “I’ve been saying that something’s going on here. I was saying this when he was candidate Joe Biden, and I’ve been saying that it’s only going to get worse, and guess what. We’re watching that happen right before our eyes right now.”
