Biden takes tumble off of bicycle during morning ride in Delaware

A harrowing scenario unfolded on Saturday morning when President Joe Biden, during a bike ride in Delaware with his wife Jill, collapsed to the ground after he stopped to chat with a group of assembled journalists, causing a flurry of activity from those nearby, as Fox News reports.

According to the outlet, the avid recreational cyclist explained that his foot simply became caught in the pedal’s toe cages when slowing down to talk to reporters, prompting the fall.

Worrisome scene

Political journalist Nikki Schwab chronicled the events surrounding Biden’s embarrassing spill, saying that at 8:29 a.m., he cycled past reporters while accompanied by Secret Service agents.

It was not until 9:40 a.m. that Biden slowed his bike to speak to reporters, taking a tumble to the ground, causing those same agents to swarm to his attention and check on his condition. WATCH:

Biden was immediately asked whether he was hurt or needed additional assistance, to which he replied, “I’m good,” a response later confirmed by a White House official who told Fox News, “The president said his foot got caught on the pedal while dismounting and he is fine. No medical attention is needed,” adding, “[t]he president looks forward to spending the rest of the day with his family.”

Equipment to blame?

The New York Post suggested that the bicycle Biden was riding near his Rehoboth Beach home was an older model Trex FX 1 Disc, a design intended for a range of terrain types, and while a former employee of the manufacturer opined with “high confidence” that the identification was correct, that individual also declared, “it’s really hard to tell – that thing is ancient.”

According to an examination of Biden’s ride conducted by Bicycling magazine in 2020, it was described as “a well-loved one from the looks of it” with a “rusty chain well past its prime.”

The breakdown also noted the additional equipment installed on the bike, including a water bottle holder, a rear-view mirror, and the aforementioned toe cages on the pedals, which the president himself said caused his fall.

According to the former Trek employee, those devices, especially when combined with the “step over” frame that characterizes Biden’s bike, can cause less-agile riders to experience difficulty dismounting, as the Post noted.

All’s well that ends well?

Though the sight of the commander in chief dropping to the ground in a heap was certainly an unsettling experience for all who saw it, Biden went to great lengths to demonstrate that he emerged from the event unscathed, even doing a little dance outside St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church after attending Saturday afternoon mass, as the Post reported separately.

Beaming brightly, pumping his fists, and acting as though nothing had happened hours before, Biden did his best to convey the image of a nimble man unaffected by the mental and physical challenges of aging, a feat with which he is having increasingly questionable success as speculation mounts as to whether he can withstand the rigors of another presidential campaign in 2024.
