Biden terminates judicial nomination for an anti-abortion attorney

President Joe Biden has decided to call off his nomination of an anti-abortion attorney for a position in the federal judiciary, The Hill reports.

The anti-abortion attorney is Chad Meredith.

Meredith is a former Kentucky solicitor general, who has been a staunch advocate for limiting abortion access in Kentucky.

Why nominate him?

This whole situation might seem a bit surprising. Why would Biden — an abortion advocate — be nominating an anti-abortion attorney to a spot in the federal judiciary? It’s a good question –one that has had Biden’s followers up in arms ever since they learned about it.

The New York Times reports that this was part of a deal that Biden allegedly made with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). What did McConnell offer in exchange? Apparently a promise not to hold up Biden’s other nominations for the federal judiciary.

How much truth there is to all of this is something that is unclear. McConnell, for his part, claims that he never promised Biden anything in exchange. Rather, McConnell claims that this was just some kind of bygone “collegiality” or “routine cooperation.”

Whether McConnell can be trusted is still unknown.

Why call it off?

The answer appears to revolve around Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R).

According to reports, Paul is against the nomination of Meredith to the federal judiciary, and it is for this reason that the Biden administration has decided to call the whole thing off.

“In considering potential district court nominees, the White House learned that Senator Rand Paul will not return a blue slip on Chad Meredith,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said on Friday. “Therefore, the White House will not nominate Mr. Meredith.”

The only question remaining is why did Paul not support the nomination of Meredith. From the outside looking in, it seems even more puzzling than Biden’s agreement to nominate Meredith in the first place.

Unfortunately, we simply do not know why Paul wasn’t on board with this one. He has yet to comment on the matter.
