Ever since the Supreme Court rejected the Roe v. Wade precedent and returned the issue of abortion regulation to the individual states, Democrats have furiously insisted that, if given the chance, they will swiftly restore the protections of Roe v. Wade nationwide, if not expand abortion rights even further.
That includes President Joe Biden, who made it “crystal clear” during a speech Thursday that protecting and expanding abortion rights in all states, among other things, was a top priority for Democrats in the next congressional term, Axios reported.
Aside from vowing to fully legalize abortions everywhere, Biden listed off several other top legislative priorities that were interspersed amid repeated rhetorical assaults against “MAGA Republicans,” who he accused of embracing “semi-fascism,” among other choice insults, some aimed at specific elected Republicans by name.
“MAGA Republicans” and abortion rights
President Biden on Thursday delivered remarks in a high school gym in Rockville, Maryland, at a campaign rally on behalf of the Democratic National Committee.
“Folks, we’re just 76 days away from the midterm election — 76 days. And to state the obvious, there’s a lot at stake. So, I want to be crystal clear about what’s on the ballot this year,” Biden said. ” Your right to choose is on the ballot this year.”
Later in the speech, the president said, “So how extreme are these MAGA Republicans? Just take a look what happened since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In red state after red state, there’s a race to pass the most restrictive abortion limitations imaginable, even without exception for rape or incest. ”
“But these MAGA Republicans won’t stop there. They want a national ban. They want to pass a legislative national ban in the Congress,” he continued. “If the MAGA Republicans win control the Congress, it won’t matter where you live; women won’t have the right to choose anywhere, anywhere.”
Biden went on to say that Republicans and the Supreme Court had “awakened to the powerful force in America: the women of this nation,” and added, “Well, guess what? MAGA Republicans don’t have a clue about the power of women. Let me tell you something: They are about to find out.”
Abortion rights are at the top of the priority list
Toward the end of his speech, President Biden launched into a list of top legislative priorities if Democrats retained control of Congress after the midterm elections, and abortion rights were at the top of that list.
“If we elect two more senators, we keep the House — and Democrats, we’re going to get a lot of unfinished business we’re going to get done,” he said. “Folks, look, we’ll codify Roe v. Wade.”

To be sure, the issue of abortion rights has been galvanizing for Democrats and has likely increased the previously flagging enthusiasm for Democratic voters in November, but the Democratic Party is facing substantial headwinds and prospects for retaining their majority control remain incredibly slim, much less expanding their control of the Senate enough to bypass the filibuster’s 60-vote threshold to pass something like nationwide abortion rights protections or any of the other progressive priorities Biden mentioned.
