Rep. Biggs announces impeachment effort targeting DHS Secretary Mayorkas

President Joe Biden has made it clear that he intends to reverse as many of his predecessor’s border and immigration policies as possible.

Now, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing an impeachment threat over his perceived efforts to abandon his duties to secure the nation’s southern border.

“Unnecessary and avoidable risks”

According to the Washington Examiner, U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) announced this week that he intends to formally file articles of impeachment against Mayorkas.

A staunch conservative and proponent of strict border security, Biggs is the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and represents a district near the U.S.-Mexico border. He was a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump’s tough policies.

In a statement on Friday, Biggs declared: “Secretary Mayorkas is a threat to the sovereignty and security of our nation. As a result of his actions and policies, America is more in danger today than when he began serving as Secretary.”

The congressman went on to accuse Mayorkas of “willfully refusing to maintain operational control of the border,” insisting that he is “encouraging” migrants to illegally enter the U.S.

“Under his direction, DHS is systematically releasing COVID-19 positive aliens into our communities, subjecting the American people to unnecessary and avoidable risks,” Biggs wrote. “Secretary Mayorkas is failing to faithfully uphold his oath of office and is presiding over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement, at the expense of the U.S. Constitution and the security of the United States.”

“Blatant and consistently refused”

As a result, he said that he intends to file articles of impeachment calling for the secretary’s removal as soon as Congress returns from its current monthlong recess.

The Examiner noted that it remains unclear whether other Republicans are inclined to sign on in support of the effort, which stands seemingly insurmountable odds under a Democratic-controlled House and Senate. Biggs is likely, however, to attract the support of GOP Rep. Chip Roy, also of Texas.

In a statement to Fox News on Tuesday, Roy asserted: “Over the past several months, President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have blatantly and consistently refused to do their constitutional duty to take care that the immigration laws be faithfully executed, as required by Article II, endangering countless American and foreign lives in the process.”

He has also tagged recent tweets with #ImpeachBiden and #ImpeachMayorkas in recent days.

It remains to be seen whether the effort would be more viable if Republicans regain control of Congress after next year’s midterm elections.
