Sec. Blinken says military response possible in Iran

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was questioned Sunday about the Biden administration’s plans to counter Iran’s nuclear aspirations.

According to The Daily Wire, America’s top diplomat suggested that military action is on the table to rein in the country, saying President Joe Biden will take “whatever action is appropriate” to keep Iran from killing Americans after a recent drone attack targeting U.S. troops.

“How long can you give them?”

The Biden administration has sought to revive former President Barack Obama’s 2015 Iran deal, but Blinken acknowledged that time is running out to do so, with negotiations at a standstill.

“How long will you give them before their nuclear program is beyond the point of being able to stop?” Blinken was asked by Margaret Brennan of Face the Nation.

Blinken said “diplomacy is the best path forward” for bringing Iran back into compliance, adding, “every option is on the table.”

“But here’s what’s important: Iran, unfortunately, is moving forward aggressively with its program,” he said. “The time it would take for it to produce enough fissile material for one nuclear weapon is getting shorter and shorter.”

The Iran deal went kaput after President Trump pulled the United States out of it in 2018 and slapped sanctions on Iran, setting off tensions that culminated in the deadly strike that took out top general Qassem Soleimani in January 2020, the New York Post noted.

Biden vows a response

The Biden administration engaged in tit-for-tat strikes in February and June, and attempts to revive the Iran deal have been vexed by continued tensions.

The United States sanctioned Iran last week after a drone attack on an American base in Syria that resulted in no casualties. Pro-Iran media have said the attack was a response to an Israeli strike near the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.

When Brennan asked Blinken whether sanctions would be sufficient to keep Iran from trying to “kill Americans,” he said that the Biden administration would respond to any threat from Iran, and its proxies.

“The president is very much prepared to take whatever action is appropriate at a time and place of our choosing by whatever means are appropriate to prevent and stop Iran from engaging in these activities or its proxies engaging in these activities,” he said.

From Rome on Sunday, Biden also said that the United States will respond to Iranian aggression of any kind.
