Americans were shocked this weekend following a shooting that a left New York City police officer murdered another wounded.
Yet rather than focusing on going after violent criminals, Mayor Eric Adams has instead decided to target gun owners.
Fox News has reported that Lashawn McNeil, the 47-year-old man who is alleged to have murdered Officer Jason Rivera and wounded Officer Wilbert Mora, had a long criminal history.
Alleged killer was on probation for felony drug charges
McNeil was on probation for a felony narcotics conviction at the time of the shooting and had arrests dating back to 1998. He was himself shot by a third officer and died in hospital on Monday.
The suspect is alleged to have used a .45 caliber Glock semiautomatic handgun equipped with a large capacity magazine which was original stolen from an owner in Baltimore.
Maryland law limits the capacity of firearm magazines to 10 rounds and it has not yet been determined how McNeil was able to obtain the weapon. Despite these fact, Adams used the tragedy to call on Congress to pass additional gun restrictions.
“There are no gun manufacturers in our city,” Adam said in a tweet last Friday evening. “How are we removing thousands of guns off our streets and somehow they still find their way into the hands of killers? We need Washington to act now to stop the flow of weapons into our cities.”
New York already has some of America’s toughest gun laws
“We are all witnesses,” the mayor continued. “To gun violence. To these murders. To the failures of leaders who have allowed these killers to get ahold of guns.”
“We won’t allow violence to divide our city,” Adam went on, adding, “It will unite us — being united is the only way we can save our city.”
Interestingly, Breitbart writer Awr Hawkins noted that New York already has some of America’s most restrictive gun laws.
He pointed to a report from the anti-gun organization Everytown for Gun Safety which rates the state as third in the nations when it comes to limiting gun ownership.
This includes a so-called assaults weapons ban, a limit on magazine capacity, a permit to purchase a handgun, and onerous rules on carrying firearms.
