President Joe Biden appears to have just caved.
The Washington Examiner reports Biden, in a meeting with the National Governors Association, as admitting that there “is no federal solution” to the omicron variant of the coronavirus which is now spreading throughout America.
“Look . . .”
Monday was the 40th coronavirus-related meeting between the National Governors Association and the White House. But, it was the first one in which Biden addressed the governors himself.
“Look, there is no federal solution,” Biden said. “This gets solved at the state level.”
What exactly Biden meant by this isn’t clear. But, he did tell the governors to continue encouraging people to get vaccinated as vaccinations, according to Biden, are the key to beating the coronavirus. “if you need something, say something,” Biden said.
Biden went on to lay out the steps taken by his administration to respond to the coronavirus.
“The bottom line is I want to assure the American people that we’re prepared,” Biden said. “We know what it takes, and as this group of bipartisan governors shown, we’re gonna get through by working together.”
Biden’s “there is no federal solution” marks a significant change in his coronavirus rhetoric. He, after all, campaigned on being able to beat the virus. So, in some sense, this is an admission of defeat.
Following Biden’s remarks, Republicans responded by criticizing the president for his “vaccine-only” approach to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Look, they’ve approached this with a vaccine-only strategy right from the beginning and while I think the vaccines are a wonderful advancement, they’re not the only story here and it has been to the detriment of public health that they’ve pushed this vaccine-only strategy,” Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) said.
Burgess and other Republicans also slammed Biden for helping to create the current economic crisis by pushing the American Rescue Plan through Congress at the start of his presidency. Burgess said:
[D]on’t forget, right after he was inaugurated, it was, crush the coronavirus with the American Rescue Plan, so another $2 trillion went out the door that fueled the inflationary pressures that we’re feeling today. And they didn’t get the job done.
After speaking with the governors, Biden headed off to his beach house in Delaware.
