A new COVID variant was identified in South Africa this past week. Known as “Omicron,” it it has President Joe Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci making demands.
According to the Daily Wire, Biden told reporters during a press conference in Nantucket, Massachusetts on Friday, “We don’t know a lot about the variant, except that it is of great concern.”
“It seems to spread rapidly,” he continued. “And I spent about a half-hour this morning with my COVID team, led by Dr. Fauci, and so, that was the decision we made.”
Biden also moved to issue a temporary travel ban on South African along with Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Malawi.
Biden demands that Americans get vaccinated, receive booster shots
In a statement explaining the decision, Biden went on to urge Americans who are already vaccinated to receive an additional booster shot.
“[F]or those Americans who are fully vaccinated against severe COVID illness – fortunately, for the vast majority of our adults — the best way to strengthen your protection is to get a booster shot, as soon as you are eligible,” he stated.
“Boosters are approved for all adults over 18, six months past their vaccination and are available at 80,000 locations coast-to-coast,” Biden continued.
The president went on to claim that boosters “are safe, free, and convenient,” adding, “Get your booster shot now, so you can have this additional protection during the holiday season.”
President imposes travel ban after opposing similar ban imposed by Trump
He also demanded that those who have not received the vaccine to do so, stressing, “This includes both children and adults… we need more Americans in all age groups to get this life-saving protection.
“If you have not gotten vaccinated, or have not taken your children to get vaccinated, now is the time,” the president insisted.
“Finally, for the world community: the news about this new variant should make clearer than ever why this pandemic will not end until we have global vaccinations,” he concluded.
Interestingly, Fox News noted that Biden and other Democrats initially condemned a travel ban that former President Donald Trump imposed on China when the COVID pandemic first began. In a tweet from February of 2020 he accused Trump of promoting “hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering.”
