Progressive Rep. Bush reveals her parked car was shot up in St. Louis

Some progressive politicians have spent much of the past two years arguing for more lenient criminal justice policies — if not calling for police agencies to be defunded entirely.

Over the weekend, however, one such lawmaker was the victim of a violent crime when her unoccupied vehicle was shot up in her hometown.

“Thankfully no one was harmed”

According to Fox News, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) discovered over the weekend that her car had been hit with bullets as it was parked in St. Louis.

She addressed the incident in a tweet, explaining: “I’m touched by everyone who has reached out. Thankfully no one was harmed. But any act of gun violence shakes your soul.”

Although she has been a vocal supporter of efforts to defund the police, Bush offered a defense for her own stance, tweeting: “That’s why our movement is working to invest in our communities, eradicate the root causes of gun violence, and keep everyone safe.”

She has also attracted allegations of hypocrisy for supporting strict gun control measures while employing private armed security guards to protect her.

Of course, the Missouri Democrat is not the only member of her party who has become a victim of crime after endorsing controversial ideas related to policing. Last month, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was reportedly carjacked in Philadelphia.

“I just gave them whatever they asked for”

In a statement on Dec. 22, Scanlon’s office noted that she “was physically unharmed” during the frightening encounter.

“Wednesday afternoon, at around 2:45 p.m., Congresswoman Scanlon was carjacked at gunpoint in FDR Park following a meeting at that location,” the statement continued.

Despite a prevailing anti-police sentiment on the left, Scanlon offered her gratitude for the “swift response” of local police.

The carjacking came just one day after Illinois state Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, also a Democrat, and her husband were the victims of a similar crime near Chicago.

She said at the time that they had just gotten in their vehicle when the attackers approached, adding: “I don’t know that I ever had an idea of what to do in that, you know, instance, so I just gave them whatever they asked for and they took everything.”
