Businessman and Putin critic found dead in Washington D.C.

A Latvian-born investment banker, nightclub owner and critic of Vladimir Putin was found dead outside his apartment in Washington D.C.

Dan Rapoport, 52, was discovered on the sidewalk Sunday evening in an apparent suicide, the New York Post reported.

The police were responding to a call about a “jumper” when they found Rapoport outside his posh Georgetown apartment around 9 p.m.

He was found with $2,600 in cash, a broken cellphone, and a cracked headphone. The police said they don’t suspect foul play.

His widow disputed an initial report which said that his dog was found nearby with a suicide note and money. The report also said that Rapoport’s wife had left him and that he had been seen fooling around with young women at a London bar in May.

“There were no suicide notes, no suicide, no trip to London, no breakup,” Rapoport’s wife Alena said.

Rapoport was born in Latvia when it was part of the Soviet Union. He came to the United States with his family in 1980. After the fall of the Soviet Union, he went to Russia to pursue a career in finance.

The entrepreneur co-owned the famous SoHo Rooms nightclub in Moscow. Another co-owner of the club, Sergei Tkachenko, committed suicide in 2017.

Rapoport was a strident critic of Putin. He even created a fake persona, Pentagon analyst “David Jewberg,” to launch his polemics against the Russian autocrat.

In 2012, as Russia was swept by anti-Putin protests, Rapoport moved back to the United States with his first wife and lived there until 2016, when he sold his Washington, D.C. mansion to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former President Trump, and her husband Jared Kushner.

Rapoport had been living in Ukraine with his second wife, Ukrainian virologist Alena, when Russia invaded in February.

He evacuated his wife and daughter from Kyiv and had planned to re-unite with them in the United States, his widow said.
