CA Gov. Newsom ‘hopeful’ Harris will be next president

The Washington Examiner reports that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) recently expressed his hope that Vice President Kamala Harris will become the next president of the United States.

Harris can now say that she has at least one vote. Whether she can count on getting any more is a different story altogether.

“I’m hopeful”

Newsom expressed his wish that Harris will be the next president in an interview that he participated in on Thursday.

“I’m hopeful that she’s the next president of the United States,” Newsom said.

None of this will come as any surprise to those familiar with California politics. Harris, the former Democratic U.S. senator from California, has been one of Newsom’s chief supporters, even campaigning for him during the recall vote that he faced in 2021.

As for his own presidential ambitions, Newsom claimed that he has none, saying, “Yeah, I mean, I have sub-zero interest: It’s not even on my radar.”

Newsom has been saying something along these lines for a while now. But, the Examiner suggests that, based on other reporting, Newsom may not exactly be telling the truth here. Time will tell.

As for Harris…

We all remember what happened to Harris during the 2020 presidential election. She had to drop out of the running because she failed to garner even a modicum of support.

It has been made clear that the political left had hoped that being President Joe Biden’s vice president would help Harris to become more popular. But, if anything, the opposite has been the case.

Harris has received some of the worst polling numbers of any vice president in recent history. Currently, Real Clear Politics has Harris’s average approval rating at 37% and her average disapproval rating at 55%, which puts her underwater by a whopping 18 percentage points. On individual polls, Harris has seen approval ratings in the 20s.

This has presented the Democrat Party with a serious problem heading into the 2024 presidential election: they don’t appear to have a viable candidate, as Biden is old and unpopular, and Harris is just wildly unpopular and completely out of her depth.

Suffice it to say that Newsom is in a very small minority in hoping that Harris will become the next president.
