California Gov. Gavin Newsom tests positive for COVID

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has long been a vocal proponent of vaccination as a way to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Still, that hasn’t prevented him from contracting the virus. According to Fox News, Newsom tested positive for COVID on Saturday.

“Grateful to be vaccinated”

“This morning, the Governor tested positive for COVID-19 after exhibiting mild symptoms. The Governor will continue to work remotely,” a statement put out by Newsom’s office read.

“In accordance with local and state health guidelines, Governor Newsom will remain in isolation at least through Thursday, June 2 and until he tests negative,” it added.

The governor also made a point of addressing his COVID diagnosis in a tweet on Saturday that touted his vaccination status.

History of flouting COVID rules

Newsom has made opposing COIVD a key part of his governorship and helped ensure that California had some of the nation’s toughest lockdown rules.

However, he hasn’t always been willing to abide by those restrictions himself. Newsom made headlines in late 2020 after photos emerged which showed him dining without a mask at a crowded birthday party even as the state saw a spike in new COVID cases.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson mocked Newson’s claim that he was unaware that the event would be a large indoor gathering.

“OK, Gavin. So you had no idea there were going to be a dozen people at your own party?” Carlson asked on an episode of his show. “You’re the governor, but you never saw the guest list, you were totally shocked? That’s ridiculous. It’s too stupid to be an explanation and we are more stupid for pretending to believe it.”

More recently, Newsom was criticized for flouting his state’s mask rules to take a photo with basketball legend Magic Johnson.
