Yet another high-profile Democrat has found themselves in hot water over reports that she violated coronavirus-related lockdown rules.
According to Fox News, Contra Costa County, California District Attorney (DA) Diana Becton is facing criticism after being accused of hosting a wedding reception last summer that reports said may have flouted both state and local regulations put in place to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
“A wedding in my yard”
Becton reportedly told the San Francisco Chronicle that she had organized a “small, outdoor wedding and adhered to state and county restrictions.”
“I had a wedding in my yard that was really based upon the love that we shared,” Becton told the Chronicle. “I hope that I did not do anything that was in violation of any rules. If I did, it certainly was not my intent.”
But as Fox News pointed out, no such gathering would likely have been permitted under California’s regulations at the time, even with masks and social distancing. What’s more, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that neighbors recalled getting notes warning that there would be some “20 to 30” additional vehicles parked in the neighborhood.
“It’s human nature”
As such, conservatives just aren’t buying what Becton is selling. “She would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to not know that our governor and our state health officials have strongly discouraged, and at times banned, gatherings of any size,” Center for American Liberty CEO Harmeet Dhillon told Fox News.
“Her tone-deaf, crass remark about how ‘we don’t just get married in my community, we have a celebration,’ that’s literally every community in the world,” Dhillon added.
“Literally every civilization celebrates marriage with a gathering. It’s human nature. I just celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary this weekend,” the conservative activist said. “It did not occur to me, as a person who respects the law, though I disagree with it, to have a celebration — notwithstanding the fact that it’s very clear that some celebrations are barred by law right now.”
Not the only one
Becton now finds herself on a growing list of Democrats who have been caught flouting coronavirus-related restrictions — and that list includes the governor of her state.
In November, Fox News published photos of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) attending a crowded dinner party where participants were neither masked nor socially distanced.
That story came just two months after the network broadcast footage showing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) without a mask while getting her hair done at a San Francisco salon that was supposed to be shut down under current rules.
Instead of apologizing, Pelosi accused the salon owner of orchestrating a “set-up” and said that she was the one who was owed an apology, as Fox reported at the time. Seems like the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree.
