Can Trump win in 2024? Primary yes, general election no, some predict

A growing number of voices are warning that former President Donald Trump could easily win the GOP primary but again lose the election in 2024 if he runs for president.

The concern was noted in a new op-ed by Washington Examiner editor-in-chief Hugo Gurdon on Wednesday.

The concern

“So why would the Republican Party choose any candidate whom Democrats want as their opponent? Most obviously, why even consider nominating Trump for the presidency again in 2024 when he’s already been handily beaten before?” Gurdon asked.

“The GOP has many better options. Republicans who governed effectively in Florida, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Georgia, and elsewhere, to name only the gubernatorial possibilities, cantered home with big margins of victory,” he added.

The contenders

“The shadow campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is poised to break wide open, with about a dozen 2024 contenders scheduled to showcase themselves to leading donors and activists attending an annual Republican Jewish Coalition conference,” the Washington Examiner reported last week.

“Former President Donald Trump is not on the guest list. He was invited to Las Vegas but declined, RJC officials confirmed Monday. But nearly every other prominent Republican eyeing a White House bid is coming. That includes former Vice President Mike Pence and two veterans of Trump’s Cabinet: former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley,” it added, also noting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will also join the event.

Trump has already been urged to delay any announcement to run in 2024 due to a run-off election next month for Georgia’s Senate seat.

Trump-endorsed Herschel Walker faces Raphael Warnock as neither candidate reached 50% of votes as required in the state.

The warning to delay is part of a larger concern by some that Trump should not run at all, letting someone who can better unite the party and American voters to lead the way.
