Car crash on site of Nebraska Memorial Day parade leaves 2 dead, 19 injured

When two cars driving near the Lincoln, Nebraska annual Memorial Day “Americruise Night” event crashed and then plowed into the crowd around 10:46 p.m., it left two people dead and 19 others injured.

The two women, 22 and 20, killed in the crash were in one of the cars involved.

Neither of the cars in the crash was part of the event, which was sponsored by the Midwest Association of Car Enthusiasts and involved hundreds of vehicles.

The accident occurred when one of the cars turned in front of the other one and was t-boned. Both cars then swerved into the crowd.

“Mass casualty event”

“Nineteen individuals have been transported to area hospitals, including a number of people who were present on the sidewalk area at the time of the crash,” the Lincoln Police Department said in a Facebook post. “Again, one has life threatening injuries.”

Police labeled the crash a “mass casualty event.”

While the term would seem to refer to an incident involving a high number of deaths, the term actually refers to an event that overwhelms the available health care services available in the area at the time.

It is unlikely that 19 or more ambulances would be available in one area at the same time, which could be why it was labeled that way. In addition, hospitals are often near capacity and might have been unable to take 19 victims at once.

Not the first

It isn’t the first time this event has led to a death. In 2000, a woman bystander was killed when a car jumped the curb and drove into her.

The incident is reminiscent of the car that plowed into a Christmas parade last year in Waukesha, Wisconsin, killing five and wounding over 40.

In that case, however, the driver fully intended to cause harm to bystanders due to mental illness.

This incident appears to be nothing but an accident that occurred too close to the Barnes and Noble parking lot where the crowd was gathered.
