Following the public release of thousands of his emails, chief White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci is facing renewed scrutiny.
As Fox News Channel personality Tucker Carlson argued during a recent installment of his show, recent revelations might provide grounds for a criminal investigation of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director.
“From the very beginning”
According to Breitbart, Carlson explained his position on Fauci’s emails in a segment of Wednesday evening’s broadcast.
“Collectively, they show that, from the very beginning, Tony Fauci was worried that the public might conclude COVID had originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” the Fox host told his audience.
The Chinese-run laboratory has come under new speculation in recent weeks after experts spent most of the pandemic downplaying the so-called lab-leak theory.
“Now, why would Tony Fauci be concerned that Americans would conclude that?” Carlson asked. “Possibly because Tony Fauci knew perfectly well that he had funded gain-of-function experiments at that very same laboratory.”
He pointed to one email exchange from late January 2020 between Fauci and Kristian Andersen, an immunologist with Scripps Research Institute. In the communication, Andersen observed that “some of the features potentially looked engineered,” suggesting COVID-19 originated in a lab.
“A lot like perjury”
One document included in the message referenced Ralph Baric, described by Carlson as “a virologist based in the U.S. who collaborated with the Wuhan Institute for Virology.”
Despite Fauci’s email specifically mentioning a gain-of-function study, he denied that Baric was involved in any such research, as the Fox News host revealed in a video clip.
“Dr. Baric does not do any gain-of-function research,” Fauci told Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) during congressional testimony, stressing that “if you look at the grant, and you look at the progress reports, it is not gain-of-function despite the fact that people tweet that.”
As Carlson concluded, Fauci’s remarks look “a lot like perjury.”
For its part, the Biden administration remains confident in the beleaguered public official. During Thursday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki declared: “The president and the administration feel that Dr. Fauci has played an incredible role in getting the pandemic under control, being a voice to the public throughout the course of this pandemic.”
