Not everyone is celebrating the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new face mask guidelines, which state that people who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear masks outdoors or indoors.
Several individuals and groups on the left are criticizing the government agency for suddenly deciding to allow vaccinated people to go maskless, Bizpac Review reported.
Among those leading the criticism is CNN’s medical analyst and former Planned Parenthood director, Dr. Leana Wen.
“The CDC has done an about-face that’s shockingly abrupt: it’s confusing & could actually disincentivize vaccines,” Wen tweeted on Thursday. She added, “Yes, vaccinated people are well-protected and not a threat to others, but do we trust that the honor system — won’t unvaccinated people pretend to be vaccinated & stop wearing masks?”
Eric Feigl-Ding, a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists, similarly tweeted, “This is too risky in my opinion. Asymptomatic transmission efficacy is only in the 70s-80s even for the best vaccines. Much lower for others and for some variants.”
The CDC’s announcement was also criticized by the million-member United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union.
“Today’s CDC guidance is confusing and fails to consider how it will impact essential workers who face frequent exposure to individuals who are not vaccinated and refuse to wear masks,” UFCW President Marc Perrone said. “Millions of Americans are doing the right thing and getting vaccinated, but essential workers are still forced to play mask police for shoppers who are unvaccinated and refuse to follow local COVID safety measures. Are they now supposed to become the vaccination police?”
On Thursday, the CDC released the guidelines that fully vaccinated Americans — that is, Americans who have received both vaccine doses at least two weeks prior — could now go maskless.
“Big news from the CDC: If you’re fully vaccinated, you do not need to wear a mask — indoors or outdoors, in most settings,” the agency announced. “We’ve gotten this far. Whether you choose to get vaccinated or wear a mask, please protect yourself until we get to the finish line.”
CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that fully vaccinated people can now “participate in indoor and outdoor activities large or small without wearing a mask or physical distancing.”
President Joe Biden took the opportunity to issue an authoritarian-like statement on the matter: “The rule is now simple: get vaccinated or wear a mask until you do,” Biden tweeted. “The choice is yours.”
What remains unclear is if and how this new guideline will be enforced.
