Chicago Mayor Lightfoot finally admits crime problem, requests federal resources

As most other Democrat-run cities have experienced this year, Chicago, Illinois is an absolute disaster on the violent crime front, especially with regard to the weekly rash of shootings that continually take place.

To this point, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) seemed to turn the other way when asked by the press about her city’s sky-high shooting and violent crime rates. But as the Washington Examiner reported Tuesday, it appears as though Lightfoot is throwing in the towel and admitting that her city has a real problem.

In a Monday speech, Lightfoot announced that she’s requesting federal resources to help combat the continued gun violence problems in Chicago, which are largely a result of the out-of-control gang violence issues in the city.

“I know that people are scared and emotions around public safety, specifically gun violence, including carjackings, are running high,” Lightfoot said. “Public safety has been, is, and will continue to be my highest priority.”

What does she want?

Lightfoot’s request was multi-faceted but involved a request to President Joe Biden’s Justice Department that it deploy a contingent of federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to help enforce existing gun laws.

She believes the agents should remain in Chicago for a period of six months, and she also requested a contingent of U.S. Marshals to get through a backlog of outstanding warrants.

Of course, Lightfoot didn’t completely admit that her city has been plagued with violent crime for an extended period of time, as she said she felt the need to add “context” to her plea for federal help.

“I think it’s important to share with you some context in which this fight is taking place,” the Democratic mayor said. “Nationally, almost every major and midsize city in this country is experiencing similar challenges with violence at the same time.”

She also took a rare shot at Chicago prosecutors for going easy on those who’ve been released with ankle monitors, noting that some 50 criminals released from possible sentences with only an ankle monitor have been arrested in violent crimes.

Another bombshell

Lightfoot generated headlines again on Tuesday after she announced a New York City-style vaccine passport program that will require residents of the city to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter restaurants, gyms, and other venues if they plan to stay for more than 10 minutes, as ABC 7 reported.

“This order will remain in effect until the city deems that the threat of COVID-19 to public health as diminished significantly,” Lightfoot said Tuesday. Social media users were quick to react to the announcement, expressing disgust and with some even calling for her immediate impeachment.
