Chinese propagandist calls for Pelosi’s arrest if she visits Taiwan

Breitbart News reports Hu Xijin, the former editor of China’s Global Times, as calling for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to be restrained and punished should she follow through on her plan to visit Taiwan next month.

Reports this week indicated that Pelosi has been planning a trip to Taiwan to take place in August. It would be the first visit to Taiwan by a House Speaker since 1997 when Newt Gingrich did so.

The purpose of the trip is not immediately clear. But, at the very least, it would be a sign of support for Taiwan’s independence from China, something that China continues to deny.

“If Pelosi visits Taiwan”

Hu, in a series of tweets, argued that China ought to respond militarily to any attempt by Pelosi to visit Taiwan.

In one tweet, he wrote:

My suggestion to Chinese govt&military: If Pelosi visits Taiwan, PLA military aircraft will accompany Pelosi’s plane to enter the island, making a historic crossing of the island by military aircraft from mainland for the 1st time. Its significance would overwhelm Pelosi’s visit.

It was in a subsequent tweet that Hu called for China to “restrain” and “punish” Pelosi should she make the trip.

“Biden is supposed to have the ability to prevent the reckless visit of Pelosi, rather than ‘I don’t know what the status of it is,'” Hue wrote. “If the US can’t restrain her, let China restrain her & punish her. PLA Air Force will surely make her visit a disgrace to herself and to the US.”

The following day, Hu added:

Chinese mainland will not confirm in advance how to counter Pelosi’s provocation either. But the US and Taiwan authorities will definitely pay a high price for her visit. This will be ultimately a military game, a good show full of suspense.

Will it happen?

It appears that the Biden administration is not on board with Pelosi’s plan to visit Taiwan.

President Biden put out a statement saying that the U.S. military “thinks it’s not a good idea right now.”

Pelosi, nevertheless, maintains that “it’s important for us to show support for Taiwan.”

It appears that we’ll have to wait and see whether Pelosi follows through with her plan, and, if she does, how China will respond.
