Chinese officials rounding up citizens suspected of coronavirus infection: Report

Coronavirus continues to ravage China, with John Hopkins University reporting that the death toll has climbed to over a thousand victims, and while Chinese government officials claim they have the situation under control, disturbing footage has emerged from the country that casts doubt on those claims.

The U.K.’s Daily Mail published an article with video clips and screenshots believed to have been made in the city of Wuhan, the reported epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. The footage depicts people suspected of suffering from the disease being chased, tackled, and dragged away by law enforcement.

Drastic measures

In one of the featured clips a man runs down an otherwise empty street as a group of several officers give chase. Some of the man’s pursuers are wielding clubs and shields.

Another video snippet appears to have been shot in an apartment building, and it shows figures in white protective clothing physically dragging residents out of their homes.

Multiple people can be heard yelling in Chinese as they are manhandled down the length of a hallway, and one individual is picked up and carried by his arms and legs.

In yet another clip, a group of masked law enforcement officers wrestle with a screaming woman in what appears to be a parking garage.

Additional footage was shot by someone surveying a newly-constructed hospital equipped with rows and rows of cots packed closely together. Construction workers can be heard in the background and laborers are seen hammering nails.

Yet more footage shows people being dragged to the ground and machines pumping disinfectant spray into public spaces. Watch the full set of clips below:

Containment an “urgent mission”

Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan announced to government personnel that they are facing  “wartime conditions” with coronavirus containment efforts being the “most important and urgent mission.”

Sun ominously warned that authorities must act accordingly or be “nailed onto the pillar of historical shame forever.”

The Chinese government recently implemented a series of dramatic new prevention measures, including manadatory temperature checks in every home, the institution of a 24-hour duty system for healthcare workers and the forced relocation of contaminated individuals to quarantine camps.

Underscoring the urgency of halting further spread of the illness, Sun said, “It must be cut off at the source. You must keep a close eye. Don’t miss it.”
