Former President Donald Trump decried the crime wave that is afflicting cities across America as a brutal attack on civilization in a campaign speech with Republican midterm candidates in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In stark, no-nonsense remarks that echoed his past presidential campaigns, Trump called for an immediate end to the “deadly wave of lawlessness” unleashed by the Democratic party’s soft-on-crime policies.
Murders hit records in numerous cities last year and the national homicide rate is at its highest in 25 years, Trump said in his speech at the Treasure Island resort.
He tied the current crime wave to the violent Black Lives Matter (BLM) uprising sparked by the death of George Floyd two summers ago and the “defund the police crusade” that came out of it. Democrat cities that embraced an anti-police agenda in 2020 have seen a sharp increase in violent crime, he said.
“You practically can’t walk outside without getting shot,” he said, describing the dangerous conditions in liberal cities.
Instead of protecting the innocent, President Biden and his Democratic partners are using the law to go after their political enemies, Trump said.
“Just like a third-world dictatorship, Democrats only see the law as a weapon to persecute their political opponents while they let rapists and murderers go free,” Trump said.
“Telling it like it is”
Under Biden, an “invasion” of Chinese-made fentanyl is pouring across the southern border, killing untold thousands of Americans, Trump said. He called for drug dealers, human traffickers and cop killers to get the death penalty and blasted “weak” politicians who he said are doing nothing to protect cops.
“Police are being shot, killed, punched in the face, and they feel powerless to do anything,” he said, lamenting the abject state of the country under his successor.
To those who think Trump’s solution is harsh, Trump said that Americans cannot afford to be “politically correct” when it comes to the rule of law.
“People are afraid to be strong and sharp and tough and smart and are always striving to be politically correct. Civilization itself is right now under siege and we can’t be just politically correct,” he said.
“Go ahead and criticize me for telling it like it is,” Trump said. “We’re trying to save a country from actual destruction.”
