CNN fires Santorum over controversial comments while sticking by Cuomo amid ongoing controversy

CNN announced earlier this month that it had severed ties with former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), who had served as an on-air commentator.

While the network proved that it was willing to take a hard-line stance with Santorum over recent remarks deemed racist by his critics, one columnist noted that CNN appears to hold another prominent personality to a different standard.

“Everything I’ve ever fought for”

According to The Guardian, Santorum was fired over opinions he shared about Native Americans during a Young Americans Foundation event last month.

“We birthed a nation from nothing,” the former senator said. “Yes, there were Native Americans, but there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

In a subsequent interview with host Chris Cuomo, Santorum expressed regret for the way his comments were interpreted.

“People say I’m trying to dismiss what happened to the Native Americans,” he said. “Far from it. The way we treated Native Americans was horrific. It goes against every bone and everything I’ve ever fought for as a leader in Congress.”

The mea culpa did not resonate with others at the network, however, including host Don Lemon, who complained: “I can’t believe the first words out of his mouth weren’t, ‘I’m sorry, I said something ignorant, I need to learn about the history of this country. Did he actually think it was a good idea for him to come on television and try to whitewash the whitewash that he whitewashed?”

A string of scandals

As Joe Concha wrote for The Hill, network bosses showed far less outrage over Cuomo, who has been at the center of multiple controversies.

Recent reports indicated that he skipped to the front of the line for a COVID-19 vaccine thanks to his brother, Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo was also spotted in violation of quarantine restrictions after testing positive for the virus, a fact that came to light after an elderly neighbor threatened to file a police report.

The CNN host refused to report on the sexual misconduct claims levied against his brother earlier this year, claiming at the time that he would be unable to cover the subject objectively.

Meanwhile, a Washington Post investigation showed that the Cuomo brothers held strategy sessions for which Chris Cuomo recently apologized on air. Despite this, CNN put out a statement revealing that he would not face disciplinary measures.
