In the wake of the images from the southern U.S. border of horse-mounted Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents using tactics to keep Haitian migrants back, a number of Democrats jumped on the “whipping” narrative, which was outright false and debunked.
But that hasn’t stopped members of President Joe Biden’s administration, including the president himself, of continuing the narrative for whatever nefarious purposes, and to the shock of many, CNN’s Jake Tapper challenged Department of Homeland Security Chief Alejandro Mayorkas on why such rumors are still being spread, Fox News reported.
Mayorkas originally helped clarify the situation after the images were spread online, but apparently decided to reverse his stance after Biden insisted that the CBP agents had done something wrong, without proof or giving the agents the benefit of letting the investigation play out.
“I promise you those people will pay,” President Biden said last week. “They will be – an investigation under way now, and there will be consequences. And there will be consequences.”
During an interview Sunday, Tapper had a chance to press Mayorkas on the developing situation, especially on the heels of Biden’s insistence that someone “will pay” as a result of what appears to be a non-incident.
The CNN anchor asked Mayorkas how he can expect an independent investigation to be fairly conducted after Biden and many others in the White House have already publicly charged the agents with wrongdoing.
Tapper followed up by asking the DHS chief if the investigation will be “based on the facts, and not based on Twitter outrage.”
“But that’s the thing. Some of the initial descriptions of those images were just patently false,” Tapper said. “There’s now video out there that provides more context. Having seen the video, are you certain that there was actually wrongdoing?”
Not surprisingly, Mayorkas backtracked to some degree, pointing out the “heroic” border agents he’s worked with over the years. In a surprising comeback from the usually Biden administration-friendly anchor, Tapper then suggested that Mayorkas share those same sentiments with President Biden to remind him that border agents aren’t racist demons.
It gets worse
In addition to the fake “whipping” narrative, Mayorkas was also forced to admit that a vast majority of the Haitian migrants have already been turned loose onto U.S. soil, with nothing more than a promise to report for their immigration hearing date, which most migrants never end up doing.
“Approximately, I think it’s about ten thousand or so, twelve thousand,” Mayorkas told Fox News, when asked how many have been released.
“It could be even higher,” Mayorkas added. “The number that are returned could be even higher. What we do is we follow the law as Congress has passed it.”
