College student dies when screen collapses outside of club

 June 20, 2023

A 20-year-old college student died when a screen outside of a UK pub fell on her head.

Olivia Burt, a freshman Durham University student, passed away following head wounds from the incident outside of the Stonegate Pub Company.

The details

Jamie Hill KC, prosecuting for Durham County Council, told Teesside Crown Court: “Tragically, on the night of the seventh into the early hours of the eighth of February 2018, a 20-year-old university student called Olivia Burt lost her life as she was queuing to get into the club.

“She and her friends, and others waiting to gain access, were standing next to a decorative screen which marked an area used by customers sitting outside.

“This screen should not have been used as a crowd control barrier or for queue management purposes.

"The venue had a capacity of 630 and was hosting the 'Game Over' student night, where members of university sports clubs would socialise," the BBC reported.

"Jamie Hill KC, prosecuting, told the jury the Stonegate Pub Company failed in its duty to ensure the safety of Miss Burt and other customers, and failed to assess risks," it added.

Her parents

"It has been over five years since we lost our wonderful daughter Olivia," her parents said in a statement.

"We now await the outcome of the trial. It is incomprehensible to us how our only child died on a night out with friends," they added.

The said situation moves forward in court this week as representatives for her parents seek answers and a settlement in the case.

Despite the important hearing, the parents know that no result will bring back their child but seek to help a similar situation from happening in the future.

The court will now have its say in the critical case that took the life of one college student far too soon.
