Columnist predicts that border crisis is about to explode

According to Fox News, recently released figures show the number of illegal migrants encountered by U.S. Border Patrol agents in March shattered an earlier record set last year.

While the number is alarming, Hot Air columnist Karen Townsend argued in a piece on Saturday that things are about to get even worse.

Biden administration will end Trump-era immigration rule

Fox News reported that Customs and Border Protection acknowledged in a court filing last week that 221,303 migrants were encountered on the southern border in March.

That total represents a 28% increase over the number seen in March of 2021. By contrast, just 34,460 were seen in March of 2020 under former President Donald Trump.

Up until last month, the previous one month high for illegal border crossings was 213,953, a figure that was seen in July of 2021.

However, Townsend noted that the flow is almost certain to accelerate now that the Biden administration has announced plans to end Title 42, a Trump-era rule allowing border crossers to be swiftly deported so as to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“Never mind the hypocrisy in play that the pandemic is alive and thriving when it comes to renewing the mask mandates in place for public transportation yet Title 42 should be stopped because the pandemic is essentially over now,” Townsend remarked.

“In just five weeks, Title 42 will be gone and those working on the US-Mexico border will experience a new wave of migrants,” she continued.

Drugs killed over 100,000 Americans last year

Townsend went on to point out how Border Patrol agents “are overwhelmed as it stands now” and that a new influx will leave border communities “without enough resources to manage the situation.”

Illegal immigrants aren’t the only concern, as Townsend reminded readers that America is struggling with an opioid crisis that killed over 100,000 people last year.

“Cartels are thriving with the opportunities or human trafficking and illegal drug trafficking,” she wrote before citing comments from former acting ICE director Tom Homan.

“A record number – more migrants are dying under Joe Biden, and over 100,000 Americans have died over overdose deaths of fentanyl comes across that southwest border,” the Daily Mail quoted Homan as telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity.
