Conflicting claims over who authorized raid on Trump’s home

This week’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s home in Palm Beach, Florida has provoked a backlash that the Biden administration appears to have been unprepared for.

Evidence for this can be seen in the way that Attorney General Merrick Garland’s version of events has clashed with claims made by Department of Justice insiders.

DOJ officials tell Newsweek that attorney general was not asked to approve raid

An article published by Newsweek on Wednesday cited statements made by two unnamed high-level officials who were said to “have direct knowledge of the FBI’s deliberations.”

One individual who is reportedly “a 30-year veteran of the FBI” told the magazine that Monday’s raid was “a spectacular backfire” that stemmed from bureaucratic ineptitude rather than “political persecution.”

What’s more, the source insisted that Merrick Garland played no role in planning the raid and was not asked to approve it.

“I know it’s hard for people to believe, but this was a matter for the U.S. Attorney and the FBI,” the individual said, adding that FBI director Christopher Wray was ultimately responsible for greenlighting the raid.

Merrick Garland tells reporters he “personally approved” decision to search Trump’s home

However, that claim is in direct contradiction with remarks that Garland himself made during a press conference in Washington on Thursday afternoon.

Garland told reporters that he “personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant” for Trump’s home at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The attorney general explained that FBI personnel carried out the search as part of an ongoing investigation into Trump’s handling of classified presidential records.

Breitbart noted that for his part, the former president released a statement on Monday condemning the raid as “an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024.”

Trump went on to warn that the same forces “will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections.”
