Tom Cotton launches project to fight back against attacks on Amy Coney Barrett: Report

Even before Amy Coney Barrett was officially nominated by President Donald Trump to be the newest justice on the Supreme Court bench, many on the left had already started attacking the 48-year-old federal court judge and her record. But now, one top Republican is coming to her defense.

According to Breitbart, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton announced Friday that he’s launching what he calls a “Supreme Court War Room” designed to fend off attacks against Trump’s SCOTUS pick.

“One of the finest legal minds”

Cotton announced the project on Twitter on Friday, just a day before Trump announced Barrett as his nominee. “Today, I am launching an emergency Supreme Court War Room at scotuswarroom.com to help President Trump fulfill his constitutional duty to appoint the next Supreme Court justice,” Cotton wrote, according to Breitbart.

Cotton included in his tweet a link to the so-called “Supreme Court War Room,” which has been added to the senator’s own website. The site provides links for supporters to make donations to the cause and videos of media appearances by Cotton where he defended Barrett’s nomination.

In one such video, Cotton warned preemptively that Democrats would launch a line of attack against Trump’s nominee. “We already know that Democrats are going to use every trick in the book to smear this nominee, from attacking her religion to attacking her judicial philosophy,” he said, according to Breitbart.

Cotton’s website was updated after Trump named Barrett as his choice on Saturday.

“Judge Amy Coney Barrett is one of the finest legal minds of her generation and has now proven to be a wise judge as well. I congratulate Judge Barrett on her nomination and I commend President Trump for another outstanding choice,” Cotton said in a statement.

“Exactly what he promised”

Cotton isn’t the only Republican defending Barrett against leftist criticism. According to Reuters, Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) told ABC recently that by nominating a new SCOTUS justice — even weeks before the election — Trump is only doing what he vowed to do in 2016.

“This is exactly what he promised to do and he is fulfilling that promise,” the senator said.

The president, for his part, believes Barrett is the right choice for all Americans.

“Most important of all, she will defend your God-given rights and freedoms,” Trump told supporters at a rally hours after Barrett’s formal nomination, according to CBS News.
