Country music star Jeff Carson, also a police officer, dies at 58

Country music star Jeff Carson, known for hits such as “Not On Your Love,” and “The Car,” has died. He was 58.

The singer-songwriter, who retired from music later in life to become a police officer, died of a heart attack in Tennessee, according to Fox News.

Jeff Carson’s history

Carson was born Jeffrey Lee Herndon in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and found his musical beginnings in a church choir.

After spending time in Rogers, Arkansas, and Branson, Missouri building his reputation, Carson made a career breakthrough in Nashville. He recorded demos for stars like Tracy Lawrence, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill, and signed a contract with Curb Records in 1995.

He scored 14 hits on the Billboard charts throughout his career. His first hit, “Yeah Buddy,” was followed by a self-titled album, Jeff Carson, and two more country hits, “Not on Your Love,” which topped the country charts, and “The Car,” which reached number three and won Carson an Academy of Country Music Award for Best Video. Carson released two more albums, Butterfly Kisses, and Real Life.

Songwriter Lee Greenwood called Carson an “awesome man and patriot,” and expressed condolences to his family.

Police officer honored

Carson retired from music in 2009 to become a cop in Franklin, the Daily Mail reported. He stayed on the force until his death, and the Franklin Police Department also paid tribute to Carson.

“It’s hard to believe he’s gone. One thing is for certain — Franklin Police Officer #JeffCarson changed everyone he met, all of us, for the better! Thank you, Jeff, for your life of service & song. May his message live on: God Save The World,” the department tweeted.

The songwriter returned to the music world in 2019 to release a previously recorded track, “God Saves the World,” and he was recording an album at the time of his passing with Buddy Hyatt, Michael Ray, and Darryl Worley, among others.

Carson is survived by his wife Kim Cooper Carson and son, Dayton Grei Herndon Carson.
