After a long and rocky road from Hollywood to the political realm, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are officially divorced — and the story is sending shockwaves across the political realm.
More than 10 years after revelations that the former Republican governor of California fathered a child with the couple’s housekeeper, a court has finalized the legal separation.
Details surrounding divorce settlement remain confidential
A lengthy delay in the process was likely due, at least in part, to the complexity of the pair’s property settlement. Reports indicate there might have also been a lack of urgency since the separated couple maintained cordial and cooperative communication.
News of the finalized divorce came first from gossip site TMZ, which cited a source who claimed that the proceedings had been mediated by a private judge who reached an agreement last month.
The deal required a sitting judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court to officially sign off on it.
Details of the settlement remain confidential, but it is believed that the shared estate valued at about $400 million will be split evenly in light of the absence of a prenuptial agreement.
Schwarzenegger and Shriver were married in 1986 and they have four now-grown children together — daughters Christina and Katherine, sons Patrick and Christopher.
Suspicious Shriver confronts her husband
They first split in 2011 after Shriver discovered evidence of an affair with housekeeper Mildred Beana dating back to around 1996.
Beana became pregnant and initially claimed that the baby boy was fathered by her ex-husband. As young Joseph grew older, however, a clear resemblance to his real father became undeniable, reportedly leading Shriver to grow suspicious. Reports indicate Shriver opted to wait until after Schwarzenegger’s gubernatorial bid to confront him about the affair.
As evidenced by the decade since those revelations surfaced, however, it seems likely that the former couple will remain civil and even friendly now that their marriage has officially been dissolved. Hopefully, this legal conclusion will lead to some closure for everyone involved.
Shriver offered a public statement on social media following confirmation that her divorce had been finalized.
“Thank you all for the kindness, support, and compassion,” she tweeted. “I am humbled by the love.”
