There is no question that former President Donald Trump remains a popular figure among his backers in the Republican Party.
Recent reports reflect that popularity, describing a crowd of supporters who showed up at Trump’s golf resort in Florida to express their feelings.
“After an awesome day out on the links”
The gathering came just days after many on the left expressed outrage that the 45th president was acquitted in the Senate following an impeachment trial over alleged incitement of a riot on Capitol Hill last month.
Dan Scavino, the former White House deputy chief of staff and social media director, tweeted a video clip of the crowd on Monday.
“This is unbelievable!” he wrote. “45 returns to Mar-a-Lago this afternoon, after an awesome day out on the links….to this.”
“Why we have 1,200 people out here on Monday”
Scavino’s video revealed a large group of supporters cheering as Trump’s motorcade drove toward the resort.
The gathering was dubbed a “Peaceful and Patriotic” rally to celebrate Presidents’ Day and had been organized by a group of supporters called Trump Sign Waving Rallies.
In an interview, the group’s chairman, Willie Guardiola, explained that the large turnout was in part a response to the perception among some in the GOP that election fraud was to blame for Trump’s loss to Joe Biden in November’s presidential race.
“They stole it from us,” he claimed, adding that the issue was “exactly why we have 1,200 people out here on Monday, on real Presidents’ Day.”
“Trump still has a grip on a vocal base of GOP voters”
Guardiola went on to draw a contrast between voter enthusiasm for Trump and the level of support expressed for President Joe Biden.
“I don’t think Joe Biden has had more than 50 people at any given rally when he was running, after, even the inauguration,” he said. “I think they had fake people out there in the audience.”
Local television reporter Jay O’Brien also shared footage of the reception in a tweet declaring: “If you doubt Trump still has a grip on a vocal base of GOP voters, watch this clip from West Palm Beach today as he returned from golf.”
