Democrats spent much of the previous administration hammering former President Donald Trump over his supposedly inhumane treatment of migrant children detained after illegally crossing the southern border.
Now, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is turning the tables on the Democratic Party.
“How many children”
The Texas Republican recently excoriated Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his lack of explanation and transparency regarding how many children have been detained in “Biden cages” so far this year.
As Fox News reported, the Biden administration official was apparently unable to provide a direct answer and instead took exception to Cruz’s use of the term “cages” to describe the facilities used to house migrant children near the border.
In response, the senator cited a photo on display in the Senate that showed chain-link enclosures he personally witnessed during a tour of such a facility.
The back-and-forth came during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Cruz repeatedly peppered Mayorkas with questions regarding the condition of migrant detention sites.
“How many children have been in the Biden cages in calendar year 2021,” he asked Mayorkas.
“I’ve been to the border”
In response to the cabinet secretary’s distaste for his terminology, Cruz replied: “Fine, you can disagree with it. How many children have been in the Biden cages? I’ve been to the Biden cages. I’ve seen the Biden cages. How many children have you detained at the Donna tent facility in the cages you built to hold kids? How many children have been in those cages?”
Mayorkas once again argued the semantics of the debate, but Cruz stuck to his underlying message.
“These secure facilities in which they are locked down in Donna — those facilities, how many children have been in them?” he asked.
When Mayorkas once again dodged that pointed line of questioning, Cruz presented an enlarged version of the photo he took while touring a detention facility. Cruz was not done criticizing Mayorkas and used the opportunity to express outrage over the number of undocumented immigrants who have been detained by border patrol agents and later released.
I’ve been to the border and I’ve seen the Biden cages.
