Cruz warns Biden of political payback after Democrats ‘weaponized impeachment’

An array of Democrats spent much of the previous administration arguing for the impeachment and removal of then-President Donald Trump.

That effort included two impeachment trials — and one GOP lawmaker indicated that his party will be poised to return the gesture upon securing a majority on Capitol Hill later this year.

“I think we will see serious investigations”

According to Fox News, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) predicted that Republicans would move quickly to impeach Biden, assuming current trends continue and Democrats lose control of Congress after the upcoming midterms.

The Texas senator asserted that Democrats “weaponized” impeachment against Trump and transformed the process into a “partisan cudgel” that could be used against them in return.

His prediction of a likely impeachment effort against Biden came along with a forecast in which the GOP has a 90% chance of regaining control of the House.

“If we take the House, which I said is overwhelmingly likely, then I think we will see serious investigations of the Biden administration,” Cruz said.

He proceeded to explain that he would have personally preferred that impeachment remain a rarely used process, but Democrats established a dangerous precedent in their efforts to take down Trump.

“They used it for partisan purposes”

“The Democrats weaponized impeachment,” Cruz said. “They used it for partisan purposes to go after Trump because they disagreed with him. One of the real disadvantages of doing that is the more you weaponize it and turn it into a partisan cudgel, you know what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.”

The Texas Republican noted that GOP voters would likely exert “enormous pressure” on their representatives to go after the president.

Despite his restrictive views on the issue, the senator concluded: “I think there are potentially multiple grounds to consider for impeachment.”

Cruz mentioned the “utter lawlessness” in Biden’s border policy as “probably the strongest grounds right now” but signaled the possibility of others.

Of course, such an impeachment effort would not be the first. Despite their minority status in the House, a group of GOP lawmakers filed articles of impeachment against Biden in September on grounds related to his immigration policy, a federal eviction moratorium, and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
