Cuomo ally resigns from position as New York inspector general

New developments continue to emerge from the saga surrounding former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

According to Breitbart, New York State Inspector General Letizia Tagliafierro handed in her resignation following the recent move to reopen an investigation involving the disgraced ex-governor.

“We have no further comment”

A spokesperson for the inspector general’s office confirmed the news in a statement to the New York Post.

“Yes, she has resigned,” the source said. “We have no further comment.”

According to one report referencing a copy of Tagliafierro’s resignation letter, she did go into detail regarding the reason for her resignation but used the opportunity to affirm that she enjoyed her stint in the position.

Of course, she is known as a longtime ally of Cuomo and rose through the ranks of state government positions over the past decade before the then-governor appointed her inspector general in 2019. Cuomo faced mounting pressure to resign over multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and he stepped down last month.

Tagliafierro faced scrutiny of her own in 2019 that stemmed from her earlier role as executive director of the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, which is the state’s top watchdog panel.

Conflict of interest

According to a whistleblower complaint, the JCOPE leaked information from a meeting between Cuomo and Democratic Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. That meeting appears to have focused on whether the joint commission would launch an inquiry into alleged misconduct by Cuomo ally Joe Percoco.

The situation sparked an inspector general’s office inquiry. Since Tagliafierro was the inspector general at the time, however, the clear conflict of interest led to her recusal from the investigation.

In the end, the probe determined that there was no evidence to substantiate the whistleblower’s complaint. The matter appeared to fade into the background until a recent discovery that neither Cuomo nor Heastie sat down for an interview with investigators from the inspector general’s office.

As a result, the JCOPE has asked New York Attorney General Letitia James to launch a criminal investigation into the matter.

It was after this latest development that Tagliafierro tendered her resignation. As for whether the timing is purely coincidental or evidence of guilty conscience, that remains to be determined.
