Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo hit with charge for misdemeanor sex crime: Report

Fox News reported this week that the disgraced former Democratic governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, is now facing a misdemeanor sex crime charge.

“A Misdemeanor Complaint against former Governor Andrew Cuomo has been filed in Albany City Court,” a spokesperson for the New York State Court told Fox on Thursday. “As this is a sex crime, a redacted complaint will be available shortly.”

Cuomo spox denounces charges

The complaint was filed by Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple. Cuomo attorney Rita Glavin later denounced the development in a statement.

“Governor Cuomo has never assaulted anyone, and Sheriff Apple’s motives here are patently improper,” Glavin said, according to Fox. “Sheriff Apple didn’t even tell the District Attorney what he was doing.”

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi objected to the charge as well, arguing that it’s less about justice and more about furthering state Attorney General Letitia James’ political career.

“‘Accidentally’ filing a criminal charge without notification and consent of the prosecuting body doesn’t pass the laugh test and this process reeks of Albany politics and perhaps worse,” Azzopardi complained, as Fox reported. “The fact that the AG — as predicted — is about to announce a run for governor is lost on no one.”

“Without fear or favor”

James, for her part, released a report on Cuomo’s alleged sexual misconduct earlier this year. After the latest development in the case, she issued a statement welcoming the charges.

“From the moment my office received the referral to investigate allegations that former Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, we proceeded without fear or favor,” James said, according to Fox.

“The criminal charges brought today against Mr. Cuomo for forcible touching further validate the findings in our report,” James declared.

“Real consequences”

Mariann Wang, a lawyer for two of Cuomo’s accusers, also put out a statement celebrating the news. “Cuomo is being held to account as he should be, including by being forced to answer a criminal charge,” she told Fox on Thursday.

“My clients are enormously grateful for the courage of the women who have come forward to speak the truth about Cuomo’s misconduct,” Wang added.

She went on: “We hope that all men who abuse their power by abusing women will see this and understand that there will be real consequences to their profoundly damaging behavior.”
