‘This is OUR home’: Gov. Cuomo no longer attending Bills playoff game amid public backlash

A group of Buffalo Bills fans scored a victory over Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week.

After critics of the governor amassed thousands of signatures on a petition aimed at keeping him away from the NFL team’s upcoming playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts, Cuomo confirmed that he would no longer be attending the event, according to Breitbart.

“I’m going to be out there”

The game is set to take place on Saturday at the Bills’ stadium in Orchard Park, marking the team’s first playoff in more than two decades.

According to the petitioners, they took issue with Cuomo’s order to limit the seating to just 9% of its capacity — or about 6,700 fans — even as he expressed his plans to attend.

Fans who are able to obtain a seat will be required to take a COVID-19 test before entering showing that they had been clear of the virus within 72 hours of kickoff. It is just the latest in a series of pandemic-related restrictions that have upset New Yorkers across the state.

Initially, Cuomo said that he anticipated following his own rules and occupying one of the limited stadium seats.

“I’m going to take my test, I’m going to be out there to watch the game with you, and we look forward to it,” he said, as Breitbart noted.

“We don’t want you here”

With more than 46,000 signatures as of this writing, however, those opposed to his attendance made their objections clear.

“So Cuomo is going to attend our playoff game after telling us that we can only attend at less than 10% capacity?” the petition begins. “If he thinks he has more right to a seat in that stadium over people who have waited over 20 years for this opportunity, then people better be there to protest his entry. This is OUR team! This is OUR home. We don’t want you here.”

The governor already had a ticket to the game but confirmed that he would be handing it over to an Erie County nurse. He did not mention the petition as the reason for his reversal, however.

“I’ll be working on the State of the State, which is a labor of love,” Cuomo revealed.

In an opinion piece on Friday, the New York Post editorial board noted that it certainly appeared as though the petition played a role in the decision, remarking that he “wisely changed his mind about attending the Buffalo Bills’ playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday after massive fury from fans.”
