Andrew Cuomo had words of praise for Donald Trump on Monday during a radio appearance on Howard Stern’s show.
The New York governor told Stern that Trump “has delivered” for New York, the state hardest hit by the coronavirus, Fox News reported.
“That’s the plain truth in this situation. And since then, Howard, he’s been good in delivering for New York. He has. He’s delivered for New York,” Cuomo said. That’s a bitter pill for the media no doubt.
Cuomo praises Trump’s coronavirus response
Trump has feuded with Cuomo and various governors for weeks over which level of government – federal, or state – is responsible for a failure to provide critical medical supplies and coordinate measures like social distancing to battle the virus. Through all this drama, the president’s relationship with Cuomo – whose state accounts for roughly half of all American deaths – has been mostly positive, but the two have argued here and there.
It wasn’t long ago that Trump and Cuomo fought over who was responsible for a shortage of ventilators in the Empire State, as Cuomo dramatically told Trump to “pick” which Americans would have to die. But Cuomo was striking a much friendlier tone on Monday, telling Howard Stern that Trump has been “amazingly accessible” in providing help to his battered state.
“It’s amazingly simple. He’s amazingly accessible,” Cuomo said. “Either he gets on the phone or he calls me back in 10 minutes.”
The New York governor also noted that Trump always asks Cuomo how his mother, and brother Chris, a CNN host who has the coronavirus, are doing.
Strange feud with Cuomo opens up
While Cuomo pointed to Trump’s warm side, there is another side of the president that relishes a fight. After declaring that he had “total authority” over states on Monday night, President Trump got into a fresh row with governors over who has power to open the economy.
The controversy erupted after states on the East and West coasts formed two separate groups to begin talking about how to resume normal life for millions of Americans locked down in an unnatural “quarantine.” Trump has been eager to re-open the economy, but various Democratic governors, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, have expressed caution.
On Tuesday, Cuomo said that he does not want to pick a fight with Trump but nevertheless compared the president to a would-be “king” who doesn’t understand the Constitution. For his part, Trump gave a different take of the two men’s correspondence, mocking the governor for “begging” for his assistance, and compared himself to the ship captain in the movie Mutiny on the Bounty.
“Tell the Democrat Governors that ‘Mutiny On The Bounty’ was one of my all-time favorite movies. A good old fashioned mutiny every now and then is an exciting and invigorating thing to watch, especially when the mutineers need so much from the Captain. Too easy!” Trump tweeted.
It remains to be seen how this feud will play out, but it could be a matter of time before Trump and Cuomo are back to playing nice.
