As the death toll from the novel coronavirus keeps climbing, President Donald Trump has been advocating for aggressive measures to combat the crisis — something that recently won him praise from an unexpected source.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has been a frequent and vocal critic of the president, going after the Trump over his stances on everything from immigration to gun control. However, Cuomo recently had nothing but positive words for the commander in chief as he described their collaborative efforts to confront and combat the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Breitbart.
Putting differences aside
“He is ready, willing, and able to help,” the New York governor said of Trump during a press conference on Tuesday, according to Breitbart.
He went on: “I’ve been speaking with members of his staff late last night, early this morning. We need their help, especially on the hospital capacity issue.”
Cuomo said the state needs the help of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMMA), which he said “has tremendous resources.”
“When I was at HUD [the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development], we worked with FEMA. I know what they can do. I know what the Army Corps of Engineers can do. They have a capacity that we simply do not have,” Cuomo added.
“I said to the president, who is a New Yorker, who I’ve known for many, many years, I put my hand out in partnership,” the governor recounted. “I want to work together, 100%, I need your help. I want your help. And New Yorkers will do everything they can to be good partners with the federal government.”
Cuomo: Trump team “responsive”
Cuomo said Trump’s “team has been on it,” calling its members “responsive” and available “late at night, early in the morning.”
“They will have nothing but cooperation and partnership from the state of New York,” he promised. “We are not Democrats, we are not Republicans, we are Americans at the end of the day.”
The governor also praised Trump for “doing the right thing in offering to step up with New York,” saying, “New York will do the right thing in return.”
Not all Democrats have been as supportive of Trump’s efforts, however. During a Fox News town hall event, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said coronavirus-related travel restrictions are fueled by racism.
“Isn’t it interesting that a president who has been demagoguing and demonizing immigrants, the first thing [he] can think about is closing down the border?” Sanders asked, according to Fox News. Of course, Trump isn’t the only president to make such a call — and he likely won’t be the last.
