For the past few months, the Republican governors of Texas and Arizona have been sending voluntary busloads of newly arrived migrants to Democrat-run self-proclaimed “sanctuary cities” like New York and Washington D.C. in order to relieve the pressure on long-overwhelmed border communities.
Yet, despite only receiving a fraction of the new migrants over those months that border states receive nearly every day, the so-called “sanctuary city” of D.C. is now complaining that they’re overwhelmed and unable to handle the busloads of migrants who have arrived without federal assistance, Breitbart reported.
The absolute and galling hypocrisy on display here is both hilarious and infuriating at the same time as the leaders of these liberal cities, who have often downplayed or ignored the longstanding complaints from border states, are now balking at the prospect of getting a taste of the medicine they have imposed upon states like Texas and Arizona.
D.C. is now a “border town” and they don’t like it
During a press conference Thursday, D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau said in regard to the arriving buses of migrants, “So it’s been said, but it’s worth reiterating, that the governors of Texas and Arizona have created this crisis.”
“And the federal government has not stepped up to assist the District of Columbia,” she continued in reference to the Biden administration’s refusal to activate the D.C. National Guard, “so we, along with our regional partners, will do what we’ve always done — we’ll rise to the occasion.”
“We’ve learned from border towns, like El Paso and Brownsville, and in many ways, the governors of Texas and Arizona have turned us into a border town,” Nadeau complained. “We don’t know how long this will take to resolve. We don’t know how long they will continue busing, and so the right thing to do here is to be prepared to ensure we can greet every bus, we can get people off on the right foot, we can get them where they want to go, and that will ultimately help them in their immigration process.”

The real irony here is that, just three years ago, in a denouncement of deportation actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Nadeau herself declared, “The District is a sanctuary city, which means our law enforcement does not cooperate with ICE. As Councilmember, I have called for an abolition of ICE and wrote DC’s law to establish a permanent immigrant legal services fund.”
D.C. Mayor Bowser arguably the most hypocritical
Breitbart further reported that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D), who often touted the city’s “sanctuary” status for migrants in the past, has now expressed outrage and shock in response to the busloads of migrants arriving in her city and even declared a “public emergency” and established a “Migrant Services Office” in response to the impact those newly arrived migrants were having on the community and its resources.
The freakout from D.C. officials seems a bit overwrought, though, in that, as noted previously, the city has received over the past few months a mere fraction of what border communities in Texas and Arizona receive just about every single day.
According to The Washington Post, since buses headed to D.C. started leaving Texas and Arizona in April and May, respectively, the city has received at least 230 busloads containing at least 9,400 newly arrived migrants, the vast majority of whom don’t speak English, have little or no money of their own, few job prospects, and no place to stay.
Over that same span of time, though, Texas and Arizona have seen hundreds of thousands of migrants with the same lack of prospects or resources illegally cross the border to enter their states and communities, but now that Democrat-run cities and states have seen a small portion of the problem they long dismissed arrive at their doorsteps, suddenly it is an emergency that must be immediately addressed.
