House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has long been the subject of speculation regarding when she might call it quits.
Now, some D.C. insiders believe that the 81-year-old California Democrat sees the passage of President Joe Biden’s massive spending agenda as her last hurrah and could step down upon completing her goal.
“Speculation swirling in Washington”
Fox News Channel’s Maria Bartiromo elaborated on the theory during a segment of Sunday Morning Futures this week.
The host said that “sources” have indicated to her that Pelosi is planning to retire after Biden’s proposed $3.5 trillion agenda is enacted.
“First this morning is exclusive,” Bartiromo said. “Sources tell Sunday Morning Futures there is speculation swirling in Washington that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may step down after getting the massive spending package through.”

Passing the bill, which would dramatically expand the size and scope of the federal government, is hardly a sure bet considering the opposition of Republicans on Capitol Hill as well as a few moderate Democrats.
“Members who had their arms twisted”
Nevertheless, Pelosi, who has amassed a personal fortune during her time in Congress, has been pressuring her caucus to support the partisan spending plan. If she does decide to retire upon passing the bill, Bartiromo indicated that moderate Democrats are likely to be unhappy.
“So all those Democrat members who had their arms twisted to vote on the multitrillion-dollar package and put their own re-election in jeopardy may be fuming to learn that the speaker could be planning a cut and run,” the host added.
Although Pelosi has not confirmed any such rumors, she has indicated that her current term is likely her last. In July, The Atlantic reported that her impending retirement is a widely accepted possibility among those in D.C.’s political class.
In fact, some pundits believe her increasingly partisan behavior in recent years is a sign that she feels she has nothing to lose in the twilight of her congressional career. Of course, plenty of others are sure to find it difficult to believe that the notoriously ambitious politician will retire any sooner than absolutely necessary.
Pelosi is well beyond retirement age but reportedly decided to continue serving in the House at least in part because of former President Donald Trump’s election in 2016. Now that Biden is in office, critics are hoping that her efforts to pass his massive spending proposal will fail and she will ultimately retire without implementing any more of her progressive agenda.
