Chicago suffered another weekend of deadly gun violence that took the life of a 7-year old girl.
Five people were killed and 22 others were hurt in gunfire across the city, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The girl was killed Sunday afternoon at a McDonald’s drive-thru in the Homan Square neighborhood.
Father of girl killed also has serious injuries
A gunman opened fire and shot the young girl repeatedly, and she died at a hospital. Her 28-year old father was left with serious injuries.
Police say the shooting was gang-related and somehow linked to another, non-fatal drive-by shooting hours later at a Popeyes in Humboldt Park that left a man, 33, and woman, 19, with serious and critical injuries, respectively.
The first fatality of the weekend occurred Friday around 7 p.m. when an 18-year old man, Jawon L. Ward, was gunned down inside of a Lawndale business. A 44-year old woman was injured in the shoulder and back but was otherwise in good condition.
Also in Lawndale, a 33-year old man was killed Saturday evening. He was found unresponsive around 10:30 p.m. inside of an alley with shots to the chest. Early Saturday morning, a 25-year old man, Verico Veal, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Morgan Park on the Far South Side around 3 a.m.
Another drive-by Sunday evening in Austin, on the West Side, claimed the life of a 43-year old man who was standing on the sidewalk. Another man, 22, was injured in the leg but was otherwise in good condition.
Chicago racked by gun violence, unrest
Chicago suffers routinely high rates of gun violence, and 2020 was the second deadliest year for the city since the 1990s crime wave.
So far, 177 people have been killed this year, 32 more than this time in 2020, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The carnage comes amid a spate of mass shootings across America that has fueled calls for gun control from Democrats.
Chicago has also been a focal point of unrest after the police shootings of 13-year old Adam Toledo, in Chicago, and Daunte Wright in Minnesota.
Like many cities, Chicago is bracing for mob violence as the Derek Chauvin trial nears its end. Windows downtown are boarded up.
