Dem lawmaker’s relative arrested after Halloween party shooting that left 1 dead, 3 injured: Reports

The 19-year-old relative of a Democratic city councilwoman in California has been arrested for shooting up a Halloween party this weekend.

Benjamin David Calderon was taken into custody Saturday afternoon after allegedly killing one person and injuring three others at the home of Gilroy City Council Member Rebeca Armendariz, KTVU reported.

The details are murky, but it appears the massacre was triggered by an altercation at the large, outdoor gathering of about 70 people.

Lawmaker home, but not at party

According to the local ABC 7 News, Armendariz said she was home when the mass shooting unfolded, but was not at the party in her side yard.

One man, Michael Daniel Zuniga Macias, died from gunshot wounds at the scene, KTVU reported. In addition to the one fatality, two of the victims received “life-threatening” wounds, according to reports. One other person was injured. All were between the ages of 17 and 19, according to ABC 7.

Armendariz, who was not injured, said that the suspect is her second cousin. The lawmaker was elected to the city council in 2020.

Neighbors told the local CBS affiliate that they were surprised, as Armendariz had been a “good neighbor” until now. They described the horrifying sound of gunshots popping off in succession and people screaming in terror.

“We heard the gunshots, a bunch of them,” neighbor Linda Leighton told CBS SF. “Boom, boom, boom. Boom, boom, boom. And then we heard people screaming. So we all came running out.”

Councilwoman cooperating

As for Armendariz, the councilwoman released a statement on the incident saying she is cooperating with the police investigation.

“Our primary concern is for the individuals impacted and their families,” she told reporters, according to the New York Post. “We hope the Gilroy community will come together with love and support for those touched by yesterday’s events at the appropriate time.”

The family of the slain man has shared a crowdfunding page describing the victim as a “young adult with a good loving heart and soul” and his whole life ahead of him.

Sadly, the shooting in Gilroy was not an isolated event. At least 10 people were killed in a series of mass shootings at Halloween parties in Democratic cities this weekend, from Chicago to Sacramento, the Daily Mail reported.
