Nepotism is common in a monarchy, as leaders share power with others based on family relationships. But now the practice is taking place in the Senate.
The Democrat-controlled Senate confirmed Gayle Manchin as federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission, including an annual salary of approximately 163,000, according to Fox News.
Gayle is the wife of West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin.
Let that sink in a moment. Sen. Manchin and friends just gave his wife a six-figure job.
Imagine Republican Sen. Ted Cruz trying to confirm their spouse to a similar position. The left would explode with claims of conflict of interest.
Where is the concern when the event takes place among Democrats?
Bragging Over His Wife’s New Job
Democrats not only bypass the concerns; they brag about it.
Senate just confirmed Gayle Manchin of West Virginia by unanimous consent to be federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission, before heading out for a 11-day recess. She is the wife of WV Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.

Manchin even said in a statement, “I know that Gayle will bring the experience and skills to successfully lead the commission,” predicting she will make West Virginia and the nation “extremely proud.”
Qualified for the Job
His wife is certainly qualified for the job, however. Gayle Manchin previously served as West Virginia’s secretary of education from 2017 until 2018. She also served as president of West Virginia’s board of education from 2013 to 2014.
It also doesn’t hurt that Gayle Manchin served as the state’s first lady when Joe Manchin led as governor from 2005 to 2010.
Her nomination received a unanimous vote rather than a divide among party lines. Manchin’s influence in working with Republicans may have served as an important factor in the confirmation.
Gayle Manchin was not alone in her confirmation Thursday. Biden nominee Bill Nelson was confirmed as NASA administrator. The Florida Democrat formerly served as a four-term Senator.
