A Democratic lawmaker has raised eyebrows by funneling thousands of campaign dollars to children working on her campaign.
The latest Federal Election Commission records show that Rep. Jahana Hayes (Ct.) is still paying campaign cash to her son and daughter after being outed months ago, the Daily Caller reported.
In February, the Daily Caller reported that Hayes’ campaign fund, “Friends of Jahana Hayes,” paid over $15,000 to her son David Crenshaw by the end of 2021. Her daughter, Asia Clermont, received more than $21,000.
The payments began in 2019, Hayes’ first year in elected office, and have continued ever since.
In the first two quarters of 2022, Hayes’ campaign paid another $3,163 to her son, bringing his total compensation to roughly $18,000. His pay rate went down in Q2, but he’s still being paid about $500 a month.
The campaign has also continued to pay Hayes’ daughter at a rate of over $700 a month, bringing her total compensation to about $25,000. Hayes insists there’s nothing improper about the payments, which are technically legal. But her Republican challenger in the midterms is making them an issue.
“They may allow it but that doesn’t mean it’s right,” said George Logan. “We’re asking for two aspects to be looked at right? One is whether the work is real and whether the pay is legitimate.”
Lawmakers can hire family members for their campaigns, but they must perform actual work and their salary must not exceed market value. Crenshaw works on digital support, and Clermont works as a scheduler.
Hayes has described her children’s work as consisting of such tasks as “handling of my personal passwords and calendars and things that are deeply important.”
The former teacher became known after former President Barack Obama recognized her as National Teacher of the Year. She was also featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
A Republican strategist told the Daily Caller that Hayes appears to be profiting off her notoriety as a lawmaker.
“At best, Jahana Hayes’ children have made tens of thousands of dollars off their mother’s congressional career. At worst, Hayes is full-on corrupt.”
