New York Democrat says Trump ‘should be convicted’ for attempt to ‘steal an election’

With their Jan. 6 commission gone kaput and Donald Trump refusing to leave the political arena, Democrats aren’t giving up hope on seeing him in an orange jumpsuit just yet.

Since Trump left office, liberals have looked eagerly to Democratic prosecutors in New York to finish the job. But there are other ways to make the former president pay, in the eyes of some. Democrat Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Tuesday that Trump should be imprisoned for “literally” trying to “steal” the 2020 election, Breitbart reported.

“It was shocking”

Maloney, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, recently released a trove of emails purporting to show a “campaign” by Trump to pressure the Department of Justice (DOJ) to support his challenges to the 2020 election.

According to Axios, the documents appear to show that Trump’s staff sent memos about voter fraud “talking points” to the DOJ, as well as a legal brief petitioning the Supreme Court to invalidate election results in six states. The high court previously shot down a case brought by Texas and other states.

Speaking Tuesday, Maloney expressed disgust with Trump for pushing the DOJ to declare that the race was not “fair” and claimed he was trying to “steal an election.”

“It shows clearly in documents that the president of the United States tried to corrupt the Department of Justice, to have them claim that it was not a fair election,” the congresswoman said, according to Breitbart.

“It was shocking to me that they literally provided the Department of Justice with a brief and asked them to forward it to the Supreme Court, arguing to overturn the election,” she added.

Witch hunts multiply

Maloney said that her investigation is “just beginning” and that Trump should be convicted, also referencing conversations he had with officials in Georgia, such as Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who Trump told to “find” thousands of votes.

“It was a horrifying effort to try to steal an election,” Maloney said, “and personally, I think he should be convicted.”

While Democrats in Congress continue their investigations and prosecutors in New York pursue their own fishing expedition, Trump is also being pursued by partisan Democrats in Fulton County, Georgia, where Atlanta is located, over his comments to Raffensperger.

Although Maloney is assuming that Trump’s claims that the election was tainted by fraud have been thoroughly “debunked,” Fulton County has recently been in the spotlight over a new investigation into voter fraud that has many wondering what may be uncovered.

In the meantime, it seems Democrats are not letting Trump’s removal from office have a dampening effect on their witch hunts.
