Democrat whose son was murdered renews campaign for gun control after Texas shooting

A Georgia Democrat who was inspired to enter politics by her son’s murder at the hands of an armed stranger renewed her campaign for gun control Tuesday after a horrifying mass shooting at a school in Texas.

The carnage in Uvalde unfolded just hours before Democrat Lucy McBath won her primary with help from billionaire Michael Bloomberg, the Washington Examiner reported.

Gun control talk

McBath’s son, Jordan Davis, was shot dead by a stranger during an altercation over loud music at a gas station in 2012. The killer, Michael Dunn, was sentenced to life in prison.

In 2018, McBath, then a gun control activist, ran for Congress in response to the Parkland, Florida shooting, and won.

She got a little closer to winning a third term in Tuesday’s primaries, defeating Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (D-Ga.) with $1 million in support from Michael Bloomberg’s gun control group, Everytown for Gun Safety.

In her victory speech, McBath addressed the school shooting Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, where a depraved, evil gunman shot 19 children dead. Echoing rhetoric commonly heard from members of her party, McBath condemned “weapons of war” being too easy too access.

“I came to give one speech, but I am now forced to make another because just hours ago, we paid for the weapons of war on our streets again with the blood of little children sitting in our schools,” she said.

Dems turn to moral blackmail

Of course, McBath was far from the only Democrat sharing those sentiments Tuesday.

President Biden thundered against the “gun lobby” in a speech and called on the nation to find the “backbone” to “turn pain into action” with “common sense” gun laws.

“As a nation, we have to ask: When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?  When in God’s name will we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?”

The moral blackmail coming from the left is not surprising., but Americans should be careful to resist it. The whole nation is grieving the victims of Tuesday’s cowardly attack, and it’s wrong for demagogues like Biden to suggest otherwise.

The solution to gun violence is not to deprive law-abiding Americans of their God-given right to self-defense.
