Democrats argue for more safety after calling for removing cops from schools

Democrats are now calling for more protection in America’s schools after long calling for the removal of police officers from campuses.

The turnaround fits the current response to this week’s mass shooting in Texas but is a 180-degree change from the party’s previous view.

The call to remove officers

In January 2020, “Senators Chris Murphy (CT) and Elizabeth Warren (MA), along with Representatives Ayanna Pressley (MA) and Ilhan Omar (MN), introduced [a bill] that would prohibit federal money to be used to fund police in schools.”

The two major teachers’ unions supported the proposal. A Breitbart News op-ed asked, “Why would Democrats and powerful school unions want to leave children defenseless to any maniac who wants CNN to make him famous?

“Why would teachers’ unions want to leave their own people defenseless. Aren’t unions supposed to look after the people they represent?”

What about racial justice?

The op-ed also noted a 2020 NPR report that applauded the removal officers as part of an “uprising for racial justice.”

“At least two-thirds of American high school students attend a school with a police officer, according to the Urban Institute, and that proportion is higher for students of color. Now, the national uprising for racial justice has led to a push to remove police officers from security positions inside schools,” NRR reported.

“School systems in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Denver, Portland, Ore., and two districts in the Bay Area have all moved in recent weeks to suspend or phase out ties with police,” it added.

Now Democrats are quick to claim more security is needed for today’s schools. What changed?

It appears the left has discovered a thing called reality. It would be nice to live in a nation where security at schools was not needed, but the reality supports increased security rather than less.

When Democrats call for school security now, don’t forget their party was the one that pushed for less of it, at least until the view was no longer popular.
