Democrats are beginning to express worry about a GOP probe that includes investigation into Hunter Biden’s travel and business associates as part of a larger investigation of corruption around the presidential transition in 2016 and 2017.
The probe is seeking information that includes Hunter Biden travel records and his contact with some associates in an effort to find out whether Democratic public-relations firm Blue Star tried to leverage Hunter Biden’s seat on the Burisma Holdings board to get favors from the State Department while Joe Biden was vice president.
It’s a serious allegation, but Democrats have decided to accuse Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) of allowing foreign influence in the upcoming election instead of finding out if the allegation has any merit.
“We are gravely concerned, in particular, that Congress appears to be the target of a concerted foreign interference campaign, which seeks to launder and amplify disinformation in order to influence congressional activity, public debate, and the presidential election in November,” Democrats wrote to FBI Director Christopher Wray about the investigation.
Johnson denies getting recordings from Ukraine
Their concern comes as Johnson has legitimately requested recordings and other information from Ukranian sources, but has denied reports by Oleksander Onyschenko that recordings were sent to Johnson.
“First of all, completely false charges, and Democrats know they’re false. When reports surfaced whether or not we received some of these audiotapes, we told our Democrat minority, ‘No, we haven’t received them.’ And that’s the truth, and yet they continue to push this story,” Johnson said.
“We’re encouraging people to send us information, but then we fully vet it, we verify anything before we’d ever use it. And again, we take everything with a grain of salt we get from Ukraine. I think you have to,” Johnson went on.
Democrats get personal
You always know when Republicans are getting too close to the truth, because that’s when Democrats start with the personal attacks.
The Congressional Integrity Project reported on Johnson’s stock sales last week and highlighted a poll showing that Johnson’s constituents don’t think investigating Hunter Biden should be a high priority for him, The Hill said.
“He’s spending his time on partisan investigations instead of actually doing the people’s business. … This type of conduct is unacceptable and needs to be called out,” executive director of the group Kyle Herrig said to reporters on Monday.
Why are Democrats so interested in stopping Johnson’s investigation, if they have nothing to hide and don’t think he will find anything hurtful?
Obviously, there are many in the Democrat Party who don’t want their misdeeds to be found out, and are trying desperately to shut Johnson’s investigation down before that happens.
