Majorities of Democrats believe Constitution is ‘racist’ and ‘sexist,’ and roughly half think it should be ‘rewritten’

The U.S. Constitution is the foundation upon which this great nation was built and has thrived for more than two centuries, but not all Americans cherish and support that charter document and the fundamental rights of the people and limitations on the government contained therein.

A recent poll found that nearly half of Democratic voters, 49 percent, believe that the Constitution should be “mostly or completely rewritten,” Newsmax reported.

That desire to substantially alter and change the Constitution among Democrats likely stems from the fact that the poll also revealed that 57 percent of Democrats believe the foundational document is “racist” and 64 percent think that it is “sexist.”

“Racist” and “sexist” Constitution should be “rewritten”

Rasmussen Reports recently teamed up with the Heartland Institute to conduct a survey of how American voters view the U.S. Constitution and asked 1,025 likely voters four basic questions about that charter document between July 6-7, with a margin of error of around 3 percent for the reported results.

For the vast majority of Americans, 82 percent, the Constitution is a good thing that should be admired and defended, and that overwhelming majority includes 89 percent of Republicans, 80 percent of independents, and 74 percent of Democrats.

However, a not insignificant number of Democrats have conflicting views about the Constitution and, barring particular amendments added later to rectify certain initial oversights and shortcomings, deeply disapprove of how the original document ratified in 1789 treated minorities and women.

Indeed, 57 percent of Democrats believe that the Constitution is a “document rooted in racism” while 64 percent of Democrats said that it is a “sexist document that gives men advantages over women.”

As such, 49 percent of Democrats believe that the Constitution ought to be “mostly or completely rewritten,” presumably to better reflect the nation’s current demographics and ideological spectrum.

That said, most Americans overall reject those sentiments, as the pollsters found that 60 percent disagree that the Constitution is racist, 56 percent disagree that it is sexist, and 63 percent disagree that it should be rewritten.

“Disheartening” and “disconcerting” to see so much Democratic opposition to Constitution

“The Constitution has served as the bedrock for liberty in America for more than 230 years. To see these poll results, where half of Democrats want to see the Constitution ‘mostly or completely rewritten,’ is disheartening,” Donald Kendal, a Research Fellow at the Heartland Institute, said in a statement.

Kendal added, “President Calvin Coolidge once said, ‘To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race.’ It is a shame that half of self-identified Democrats want to throw that privilege away because of their disdain for the current perceived political landscape.”

“Although it is disconcerting to see that most Democrats, liberals, and young Americans believe the Constitution is racist and sexist, it is interesting that these same groups overwhelmingly have favorable opinions in general about the Constitution,” Chris Talgo, Senior Editor of the Heartland Institute, said. “While the cognitive dissonance is dizzying, it is also good to see that most likely voters hold the Constitution in high esteem, do not believe it is rooted in racism or sexism, and do not believe it should be rewritten. As Americans, we are fortunate to live in a land where the Constitution ensures the government cannot infringe upon our basic liberties.”
